An Ariane 4 rocket perches on its launching pad at the European Space Center in Kourov, French Guiana, shortly before blasting into space with two American communications satellites. The Satcom C1 satellite, owned by GE American Communications, and the GSTAR 4, owned by GTE Space-net, were ejected into their planned preliminary orbits. The launch was the 35th success of 40 flights for the French-built system.
