Timpview High's Richard Jackson has verbally committed to play collegiate basketball at Stanford.
Jackson, a 6-foot-6, 205-pound guard, averaged 17 points, eight assists and nine rebounds a game last year during his junior season.Rather than sign an early letter-of-intent with the university, Jackson and athletic department officials have reached a verbal commitment, since the Provo prepster is planning to serve an LDS Church mission early next fall. He would attend the university following his two-year mission.
"They worked it all out and they're all pretty excited," said Timpview Coach Don Chamberlain.
Besides Stanford, Jackson had been recruited heavily by Utah State, with BYU also showing some interest. Stanford was selected, in part because of its academics and medical school; he carries a 3.9 GPA and comes from a family that has a strong background in the medical profession.
Stanford recruited Jackson with the intention of having him play the number three position - a small forward. However, the Cardinal coaching staff is mindful that he could easily switch back and forth to the No. 2 spot at big guard.
