Utahns may call a toll-free number, 1-800-75FAULT, for information on how to prepare for an earthquake.
Bob Carey, an earthquake planner with the Division of Comprehensive Emergency Management, part of the Utah Public Safety Department, says residents will receive a recorded message on earthquake preparedness.Part of the message advises callers they need not be overly concerned about predictions for a Dec. 2 or 3 earthquake in Utah.
"Rather, we advise them to assemble 72-hour earthquake preparedness kits so they will be ready for future earthquakes," Carey said.
Carey said he believes the news media have overly publicized the abilities of Iben Browning, a New Mexico financial consultant, to predict earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Browning has said Utah and other states will be affected by a quake in early December.
