A proposed increase in the fees people pay to dump garbage in the Salt Lake City/County Landfill passed another hurdle Friday.

The Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Management Council voted to adopt the proposed increase Friday. Commercial and municipal haulers would be charged $8 per ton, as opposed to the current $6.25. People with pickup trucks or vans would be charged $5 per ton instead of the current $2.25.The recommendation will be passed to Salt Lake City Mayor Palmer DePaulis and the City Council, as well as to the Salt Lake County Commission. Both governments must approve the rate hike before it becomes official.
