Police officers responding to a recent armed robbery engaged in a foot race resulting in an arrest - but the man they caught wasn't the robber.
According to Orem police spokesman Gerald Nielsen, a man armed with a semi-automatic pistol Saturday night took more than $300 from a cash register at the Macey's Sack and Save, 300 E. 1300 South, threatened the store's night manager and fled the scene on foot. Two officers arrived as the suspect ran out the door. Another officer en route saw the suspect and joined the foot pursuit.
A second man, who fit the robber's general description, began running when he saw the officers running toward him, said Nielsen said.
That man was apprehended. Although he was not the robbery suspect, officers eventually arrested him. He is alleged to have broken into a car in the same parking lot and taken a purse sitting on the front seat.
Police are still investigating the armed robbery.
