An early morning fire at the old Salt Lake Athletic Club caused $10,000 damage Tuesday and forced the evacuation of 34 residents in the area.
Salt Lake firefighters were notified about the blaze at 140 S. 300 East just after 4 a.m., said Battalion Chief Gordon Nicholl. He said there was no doubt this blaze had been intentionally set."It's not the first time we've been there," he said.
The fire gutted three downstairs rooms, burned up into the first floor and caused extensive smoke damage throughout the abandoned building. More than 20 firefighters battled the blaze for more than half an hour before it was finally extinguished.
Nearby apartment dwellers were forced to evacuate until firefighters were able to control the blaze and keep it from spreading.
Nicholl said other small fires have been extinguished inside the building, which has been boarded up repeatedly.
