BYU's women's volleyball coach Elaine Michaelis reached another plateau in her career Saturday night in the Smith Fieldhouse when her 1990 squad won the first Western Athletic Conference championship crown.
The Cougar spikers beat the University of New Mexico 15-9, 17-15, 12-15, 15-12, giving Michaelis her 15th league title since collegiate competition in the intermountain area began in 1969-70.Michaelis's coaching spans four leagues. Her teams also won the first ICCWPE title, the first IAC title and the first HCAC title.
In beating the Lobos, the Cougars earned an automatic bid to the NCAA championships. BYU has applied to host a first round of nationals at BYU on Nov. 30.
