Rebels have kidnapped five foreign missionaries working in a remote village along the rugged border between Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian region of Irian Jaya, an Australian official said Monday.

Spokesman Leith Anderson said an American, a New Zealander and three Filipinos, along with two government officials, were taken hostage by rebels of the separatist OPM (Organisasi Papua Merdeka or Free Papua Movement) Sunday evening.
