Volunteers dig into the fire-devastated mountainside above Midway. The green buds of new leaves may not appear until next spring, but there was plenty of life in the area as an estimated 1,000 volunteers from five counties began planting trees in what may be the largest volunteer planting effort ever attempted in Utah. Two firefighters were killed and 18 homes destroyed in the August blaze near Wasatch Mountain State Park. The fire destroyed valuable watershed, leaving the area vulnerable to flooding and mudslides, which could contaminate Deer Creek Reservoir - a major source of drinking water for Utah, Wasatch and Salt Lake counties.
