Santa and Mrs. Claus spread holiday cheer to young and old as they arrive in Salt Lake City to kick off the Christmas season - five days before Utahns sit down to their annual Thanksgiving feast. Although Jack Frost was nowhere in sight, the old gent's arrival Saturday was heralded by police escorts, bands, marching groups and colorfully decorated floats during the 1990 Salt Lake Junior Chamber of Commerce Santa Claus Parade. Excited children and their parents scurried into downtown malls after the parade where Santa's helpers were on hand to take their Christmas orders and where area merchants stood ready to fill them. There are only 37 more shopping days left until St. Nick's return visit.
