The Deseret News, Utah Power & Light and the Illuminating Engineering Society are sponsoring their annual Christmas outdoor lighting contest for homes in south Davis and Salt Lake counties.

The deadline for entry is noon Friday, Dec. 7. Entries must arrive at the Deseret News, 30 E. 100 South by the deadline to be eligible as a complete list of entries will be published in the Deseret News on Sunday, Dec. 9.As entries come in, they will be grouped into geographical areas for judging purposes. Judges from the Illuminating Engineering Society will consider originality, theme, use, number of lights and artistic merit.

Two sets of prizes will be awarded in each of the judging areas, both for new entries and for entries that have participated in the contest in previous years.

Jim Turner, market specialist with UP&L, said, "We felt that some new people who hadn't entered the contest in years past were intimidated by the incredible displays that have taken years to build so we came up with a category for new entries."

The first-place prize is an indoor electric grill. Second prize is a $25 gift certificate from the ZCMI Center, and the third prizes are two sets of outdoor lights donated by General Electric.

Judging will take place Dec. 7-13 with winners announced in the Deseret News on Sunday, Dec. 16.

A brochure with complete details is available at all UP&L offices as well as many of the retail stores that specialize in Christmas lighting. Brochures are also available at the Deseret News. Call 237-2136 for information.
