To the editor:

In response to the many inquiries I have received about the trees and grass surrounding the City and County Building, I would like to provide the following information.First, one important condition of the construction contract is that each tree on the grounds be water on a daily basis during hot weather. The project engineer and I have both inspected the trees to see that they are being watered properly.

Second, the grass around the building was chemically killed so that new grass seed could be planted later this year or next spring.

An improved mixture of grass seed will be applied to create a healthier and sturdier lawn. Seeding is preferable to installing grass sod because it will prevent major disruption of tree roots.

Many hours of careful planning, review and preparation have been spent to insure that the City and County building grounds will be beautifully landscaped. Next year Washington Square should again be a place for our citizens to relax and enjoy themselves.
