Young refugees from the civil war in Mozambique are being sold in South Africa for use as slave laborers, concubines or sacrifice in magic rituals, two newspapers reported Friday.

The Weekly Mail and The Sowetan, both anti-apartheid newspapers, reported that the Mozambican refugees were being sold in the Johannesburg region for about $140 each, to both whites and blacks. The reports said some slaves were killed during "muti" or magic rituals.

The Weekly Mail said one of its reporters purchased two slaves, Jorge Mthembu, 17, and Immanuel Kambule, 18, for $80 each. The youths did not know they had been sold as slaves, it said.
