Ashley National Forest offices are now seling Christmas tree permits.
People who want to cut their own tree can purchase a permit for $5.Some general rules apply to Christmas tree cutting in all districts of Ashley National Forest:
-Permits must be purchased in advance, completed with name and address, and attached to the tree before removal.
-Trees must be cut at least 300 feet from stems, meadows, campgrounds, groups sites, administrative sites, and roads.
-Maximum tree height is 8 feet. (A special permit must be obtained for a tree more than 8 feet tall).
-Trees may not be topped, and stumps should be no more than 6 inches above the ground (not above the snow level).
-Trees are for personal use only and may not be resold.
The permit does not allow individuals to cut trees on private, other federal or state lands.
