Literacy Volunteers of America, a national non-profit organization with headquarters in Syracuse, N.Y., has more than 400 programs in 41 states, including Utah.

Trained adult volunteers provide the tutoring.
Volunteers receive 18 to 24 hours of workshop training, usually conducted a couple of nights a week for three or four weeks.
Literacy Volunteers of America publishes its own materials that teach volunteers how to work with low-level readers. Upon completion of the training, volunteers are matched with those wanting help. They meet at times and locations convenient to both. Meeting places include libraries and community colleges.
