The University of Utah Laser Institute will now bear the name of one of the school's laser pioneers.

The U. Institutional Council officially changed the institute's name Tuesday to the John A. He has particularly used lasers, in conjunction with an endoscope, a device that allows physicians to see inside the body, for surgery of the gastrointestinal tract. This method has proved beneficial in treating ulcers and removing tumors.

The institute facilitates clinical and research uses of lasers in surgery, chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, materials science and computer science.
