A former Centerville man pleaded guilty this week in 2nd District Court to a first-degree felony charge of attempted aggravated sexual abuse of a child and forcible sexual abuse.

In return, Davis County prosecutors dropped a child rape charge, also a first-degree felony.Gary L. Heugly, 46, now of Sandy, pleaded guilty to the two charges, which involve an 8-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl in incidents dating back to 1986.

Heugly was originally charged with rape of a child, a first-degree felony with a prison term of five years to life and minimum mandatory term of five, 10 of 15 years. He was also charged with aggravated sexual abuse of a child, also a first-degree felony with a three-, six-, or nine-year minimum mandatory prison term.

The forcible sexual abuse charge is a second-degree felony, carrying a prison term of one to 15 years.

In the plea bargain, the child rape charge was dropped and the count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child was amended to attempted aggravated sexual abuse of a child, which is still a first-degree felony but removes the minimum mandatory prison term. The third charge, forcible sexual abuse, was left unchanged.

Judge Rodney S. Page set the sentencing for Dec. 11.
