Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar's 6-day-old government won a vote of confidence in Parliament Friday, ending weeks of political uncertainty fanned by sectarian violence.

The decisionmaking lower house of Parliament voted 269-204 in Chandra Shekhar's favor, formally endorsing his elevation to head of government. The vote was taken after an acrimonious seven-hour debate between supporters of V.P. Singh, whom Chandra Shekhar replaced as prime minister last week, and supporters of the new government.
