Country singer Roseanne Cash says Americans suffer from a "cultural malaise" that values money over artistic creativity.

"We are becoming so heavily identified with that dollars and cents mentality that we are numbing ourselves to the better half of our nature," Cash told a national panel in Nashville evaluating music education in schools. She was one of 17 music professionals, educators and students who addressed the panel from the National Commission on Music Education.

The panel will forward its recommendations about music education to Congress and President Bush next year.
