A Salt Lake woman was raped Tuesday afternoon by a man who has apparently committed the same crime in two other states.
The rape occurred at about 3:30 p.m. in the central city area. The victim, 34, who knew the rapist through her boyfriend, was apparently in the house when the rapist walked in through the front doors and began discussing with the victim the prospects of selling a gun he was holding, said Salt Lake City Police Lt. Mark Zelig.
As they were discussing the gun, the rapist noticed the arrival of police and ordered the victim to the basement where he gagged, tied and raped her, Zelig said.
The officers were checking the area after an anonymous report that there was a man with a gun near the residence. When police officers arrived, however, the suspect was gone. The officers also knocked on the door of the residence where the rape occurred, but no one answered.
Police said the man who allegedly committed the rape is wanted in New Mexico and Colorado on rape charges.
The rapist apparently fled in a white car. Police described the rapist as a male Hispanic in his late 20s, 5-feet-6-inches tall, weighing 165 pounds, with short dark hair.
