Salt Lake County absentee ballots sent from as far away as Africa were tallied at the official election canvass Tuesday where Democrat Randy Horiuchi's victory over incumbent Republican Commissioner M. Tom Shimizu was confirmed.

The final count showed Horiuchi with 90,148 votes and Shimizu with 89,144 votes. The final totals widened the unofficial election-night spread of 990 votes to 1,004. Shimizu has told the County Clerk's office he will not ask for a recount as he had earlier planned, Jones said.A 145-vote spread favoring the Granite School District's 2-mill property tax increase request is close enough for a recount, but only if it is requested by 10 people who voted in the election - and who are willing to pay for the second count, Jones said.

Absentee ballots were sent to Salt Lake County residents as far as Operation Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia, Jones said.
