President Howard W. Hunter of the Council of the Twelve, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, observed his 83rd birthday Wednesday, Nov. 14, while on church business in the South Pacific.

The general authority, who has been president of the Council of the Twelve since June 1988 and who earlier was acting president of the council for 2 1/2 years, spent his birthday in Hamilton, New Zealand, and traveled to Auckland, New Zealand.President Hunter, who left Salt Lake City Nov. 8 and who will return Nov. 21, is presiding at church conferences in New Zealand and Australia, a church spokesman said.

He has been a member of the Council of the Twelve since 1959. Before that time he was a leading corporation attorney in Southern California.
