Some 50 people showed up for a recent meeting in Kanab to provide information on newly passed legislation providing compensation for victims of downwind atomic radiation.

Janet Gordon of Citizens Call said individuals who may be eligible cannot yet apply for the money because it has not been appropriated. Anyone wanting to be on the list for inclusion in the appropriations bill should contact her, she said.Gordon said Nevada Test Site workers during the 1950s and 1960s were added to the compensation bill.

Others who were plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed against the federal government are now hearing from attorneys who launched the complaint, she said.

Gordon said people seeking compensation should compile all of their medical records and work history documents covering the periods between 1951 and 1962.

"We still have a political battle to get the regulations written before any compensation will be paid," she said.

Additional informational meetings on radiation compensation will be held in Sevier and Iron counties, eastern Washington County and in Nevada's White Pine County and northern Clark County.
