Mesa College came from behind to score with less than three minutes remaining to beat Ricks College 24-23 and send the Western States Football League championship into a tie for the first time ever.
Mesa's Thelbert Withers scored on a pass from quarterback Chad White, then Fred Roehl booted in the extra point with 2:39 left in the game to beat visiting Ricks on Saturday.The defeat dropped Ricks into a three-way tie for the crown with Dixie College and Glendale, Ariz. All three teams finished league play at 6-2.
Dixie whipped Phoenix College 56-14 in St. George, Utah, Saturday afternoon, and Glendale won at Snow College, 28-24.
Ricks, ranked 11th nationally, faces 15th-ranked Garden City, Kan., next Friday in Pocatello, Idaho, in the Real Dairy Centennial Bowl.
Dixie, ranked 9th, plays No. 3 Nassau, N.Y., in the Dixie Rotary Bowl in St. George, while 14th-ranked Glendale hosts the Valley of the Sun Bowl against 8th-ranked Walla Walla, Wash.
The last two bowls are set for Dec. 1.
In addition to the game-winning touchdown, Mesa's Withers scored on a 1-yard run.
