Electricity was out in a widespread area of Salt Lake City after equipment failed Monday at a substation near the downtown area.

When the equipment failed about 6:45 a.m., it caused losses of power in the Rose Park and Capitol Hill areas and parts of downtown Salt Lake City, said John Serfustini, a Utah Power & Light spokesman. He said power was restored shortly before 8:30 a.m. Serfustini said he had no estimate on the number of customers affected, but he said power was out to most homes and businesses in the area.
