Salt Lake catcher Mando Verdugo almost single-handedly beat Billings on Sunday.
Verdugo went 5-for-5 at the plate and drove in eight runs for the Trappers as they came from behind to beat the Mustangs 11-9. The win kept Salt Lake two games ahead of Butte - which stomped Medicine Hat 17-5 - in the Pioneer League's Southern Division.Verugo started things off in the first inning by slamming a three-run homer, his 12th of the season. But the lead didn't last long as the Mustangs, led by Steve Reyes' double, scored four in the bottom of the first.
Billings pulled off another four-run inning in the third, running its lead to 8-3. But then it was Salt Lake's turn to come back.
The Trappers scored three in the fifth and five in the sixth - highlighted by Verdugo's double and an RBI single by Terry Shaw - to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Mustangs could manage only one more run to draw within two.
Verdugo added three singles to his double and home run.
Salt Lake concludes its four-game series in Billings on Monday night.
