Officials at the Central Utah Correctional Facility are asking area residents to contribute religious books for use by the inmates. They are specifically looking for Bibles and triple combinations of the other scriptures of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price).
It was announced that the Gideon Society has donated 75 copies of the King James version of the Bible.Librarians said about 40 percent of the inmates are of the LDS faith so the need is great for copies of the church's scriptures for use in Sunday meetings and daily institute classes. Sunday religious services have been held for the past few weeks since shortly after inmates began to arrive at the prison. Institute classes were started Oct. 28.
Only soft-cover copies of the scriptures are allowed in the prison.
Those who have books to contribute are urged to leave then at seminaries in Mt. Pleasant, Ephraim, Manti or Gunnison.
