John Willard Nielson, Sr., died November 8, 1990, at home in West Valley City.

Born September 21, 1902, in Hunter, Utah, son of John Rasmus and Hannah Deakin Walters Nielson. Married Forrest Booke July 2, 1925, in Provo. She preceded him in death in 1937. Married LaVelle Young June 22, 1943, in Provo. Both marriages solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Member of the LDS Church and High Priest in the Hunter Third Ward. Was a lifelong resident of Hunter. Employed by Kennecott Copper for approximately 44 years and retired in 1964. Was an outstanding third baseman in the old semi-pro "Copper League". Loved music and played the xylophone. Loved to work around the home and was an avid gardener and chicken farmer. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family.Survived by: wife, two sons and two daughters, John (Jack), Jr., and wife, Dorothy, Mrs. Byron (Caryl) Mackay, Richard L. and wife, Kathryn, all of West Valley; Mrs. Bill (Shirley) Ashburn, Sun City West, Arizona; one sister, Mrs. James (Bertha) Newton, West Valley City; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; preceded in death by three sisters, Faye, Fern and Lucille.

Funeral services will be held Monday, 12 noon, at the Salt Lake Hunter Stake Center, 3737 South 5600 West. Friends may call Sunday, 5 to 8 p.m., at the McDougal Golden Rule Funeral Home, 4330 So. Redwood Road, and Monday, at the church, from 11-11:40 a.m. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
