Here are the forces that Defense Secretary Dick Cheney said will be deployed both from Europe and the United States for Operation Desert Shield in the Persian Gulf.
Army troops from Germany: The 7th Corps Headquarters from Stuttgart; the 1st Armored Division, Ansbach; the 3rd Armored Division, Frankfurt; a brigade-size unit from the 2nd Armored Division, Garlstedt; the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Nuernberg; and the 2nd Corps Support Command, Stuttgart.From the United States: The 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized) from Fort Riley, Kan.
Cheney said various units to support and service the additional ground forces would be sent from the United States and Europe.
Cheney said the Navy will send three additional aircraft carrier battle groups, plus escort ships. He did not identify the carriers. He said the USS Missouri battleship also would be sent with escort vessels as well as Amphibious Group Three from San Diego, Calif.
The Marine Corps will be sending the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force from Camp Lejeune, N.C.; the 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade from Camp Pendleton, Calif., and the Maritime Prepositioning Ship Squadron One, from Norfolk, Va.
He said additional Air Force units may be tapped.
