John Stafford, a former Brigham Young University student, has been promoted to brigadier general in the Alaska Air National Guard.
Recently he was appointed director of air guard operations and executive support staff officer. He is a master navigator, having logged more than 6,000 hours flight time in WB50s, C-97s, C-124s and C-130s.He served on active duty with the Air Force from 1960 to 1965, when he flew with the "Typhoon Chasers" and participated in airlift operations worldwide.
In 1965 he returned to BYU, where he began engineering studies, and was a navigator and instructor navigator on Utah Air National Guard missions to Europe, Central and South America, the Far East and Southeast Asia.
Stafford is deputy project manager/engineer for the Alaska Power Authority's Bradley Lake Hydroelectric Project and is a former city engineer for Kodiak, Alaska.
