The Math-Science Network, the University of Utah College of Science and the Utah Girl Scout Council will co-sponsor math and science workshops today at the University of Utah.

Leading community professionals, including physicians, geologists, architects, pharmacists and mathematicians, will conduct the workshops for approximately 275 area Girl Scouts from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the James C. Fletcher, Naval Sciences, South Physics and John A. Widtsoe buildings.Purpose of the workshops is to cultivate a growing awareness of the need for more women to pursue math and science careers. The workshop presenters will include hands-on experience with everything from locating tunnels on the U. campus with a magnetometer to making a first lemonade stand a successful business venture.

The event provides the opportunity for third-grade Brownie Girl Scouts and Junior Girl Scouts to explore the excitement of learning about math and science. Women are dramatically underrepresented in these fields, Girl Scout Council officials say.
