Truck accidents an hour and 15 minutes apart Tuesday afternoon killed a driver and another motorist in eastern Tooele Valley. And a Murray man died Monday night in West Valley City when he was hit by a truck.
Vaughn Shields, age unknown, Lincoln, Tooele County.
Melvin Steward, 39, Tooele.
Delbert W. Ferguson, 31, Murray.About 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, an ore truck northbound on Droubay Road at Lincoln, three miles east of Tooele, collided with a westbound van-camper at the intersection of Pine Canyon Road.
Shields, the driver of the van-camper, died on impact. His vehicle was torn apart in the collision, said Frank Park, Tooele County chief deputy sheriff. The vehicles collided at a time when ore trucks of McFarland-Hullinger were carrying material from the Carr Fork Mine dump about four miles east of the scene. The driver of the truck, Dean Bracken, 39, Tooele, told investigators the smaller vehicle crashed into the ore-haulage section of the large truck immediately behind its cab.
About 6 p.m., a parked ore truck at the mine in Pine Canyon broke loose and ran over Steward, said Tooele County Deputy Harry Shinton. Steward was taken by ambulance to the Tooele Valley Regional Medical Center. He died about two hours later.
The victim had pulled into the mine yard and parked to wait for another truck to finish loading. He got out and the truck started to roll down the slope of the canyon.
Steward tried to jump back into the cab to apply the brakes but instead slipped and fell beneath the wheels of the vehicle. The runaway truck crashed into the side of the truck being loaded, Shinton said.
Federal mine inspectors shut down the operation of the dump late Tuesday night and returned to the scene Wednesday morning to investigate the death, the deputy said.
In West Valley City, police are still investigating the Monday evening accident that left Ferguson a tow-truck driver dead after he was hit by a pickup truck and thrown more than 100 feet.
Ferguson was cleaning debris from the street left by an earlier traffic accident in the intersection of 27th West and 41st South when he was hit about 9 p.m. by an eastbound pickup truck driven by a 28-year-old West Valley man.
Ferguson was dead on arrival at LDS Hospital. The driver of the vehicle hitting Ferguson was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of vehicular homicide, then released Tuesday.
