Mountain Crest and Wasatch qualified for the semifinals of the state 3-A volleyball championships held at West High Friday, each emerging with an exciting quarterfinal win.

The Mustangs held off surging Spanish Fork 15-7 14-16 15-10 in one Friday night matchup, while Wasatch dropped Box Elder 15-2, 15-12. In the other winner's bracket games late Friday, first-round winners Bear River and Union tussled, while tournament favorite Springville took on Skyview.Perhaps the best matchup Friday night was the Mountain Crest-Spanish Fork quarterfinal. The Mustangs, who previoused defeated Tooele in two games earlier Friday, took the first game with ease. The Dons fought back hard, however, overcoming a two-point deficit late in game two to force a third game.

In that deciding game, Mountain Crest took a 4-1 lead behind the blocking of Wendy Fryer. Spanish made it 4-2 before the Mustangs scored three quick points on a miscue, an ace from Nechele Bradshaw and a kill by Ariane Brown. That lead grew to 10-5 before Cim Rhodes served three straight aces, giving the Lady Mustangs a 13-5 advantage.

Spanish Fork's Jodi Sheen fought off a match point at 14-6 with a brilliant block, and the Dons rallied to 14-10 as Michal Lee slammed home a winner, Sheen served an ace, and the Mustangs committed a pair of mistakes. Mountain Crest wrapped up the match when Kami Hart and Rhodes teammed to block the game-winner.

Wasatch rode the talents of Melanie Sabey and Rachel Bowthorpe, plus the hitting of Maegan Pitts, to its win over Box Elder. It was a kill by Pitts at the end that gave Wasatch its trip into Saturday's semis.

In first round action, Mountain Crest dropped Tooele 15-7 15-8, Spanish defeated Ogden 15-7 15-11, Bear River held off Bountiful 16-14 9-15 15-1, and Union toppled Payson 15-6 8-15 15-3. In the lower bracket, it was Box Elder defeating Granite 4-15 15-3 15-6, Wasatch over Cedar City 15-5 15-6, Skyview besting Woods Cross 15-5 6-15 15-8, and Springville topping Emery 15-17 15-6 15-4.
