Salt Lake Acting Company's 11th annual Betty Yankowitz Bowling Classic will be held Sunday, Nov. 11, from noon to 3 p.m. at Rancho 42 Lanes, 641 W. North Temple.
The classic has become a fund-raising tradition for SLAC and was inspired by an item in the August 1980 issue of Ms. Magazine, in which a person by the name of Betty Yankowitz (which had been misspelled) submitted an ad clipped from a Salt Lake City newspaper. The advertisement, for a local bowling center, said "Dad, kids - Come bowl a line, while Mom prepares dinner." From the picture of a turkey in the ad (a real turkey - not Dad at the bowling alley), it's assumed that the ad meant for Mom to cook Thanksgiving dinner while the rest of the family went bowling. It turned out that the clipping was actually submitted to Ms. Magazine by Betty Yanowitz (without the K), who is also a SLAC season subscriber.
So, every year since then, SLAC has held its Betty Yankowitz Bowling Classic, with food, drinks, bowling and prizes for Best Team, Worst Form and the highly prized Betty Yankowitz Trophy. Other prizes include turkeys, season tickets and dinners for two.
All participants are encouraged to wear "great" bowling shirts and bring their friends. Cost is $20 per person, including shoes, ball rental, two games and food. Proceeds benefit Salt Lake Acting Company. For further information call 363-0526.
