The state-run railroad's chief resigned after a second fatal train crash in six weeks and union leaders claimed the accidents stemmed from the government cutting corners at the expense of safety.

Transport Minister Michel Delebarre said he accepted the resignation offered Sunday by 53-year-old Philippe Rouvillois, who had been president of the railroad for just six months.Union leaders said the Rouvillois' resignation would only gloss over a fundamental problem - the government's scrimping on safety to save money.
