Robert John Birkbeck, age 87, died Nov. 5, 1990, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was born in Hazelton, Penn., to John and Annie McDaniel Birkbeck on Nov. 20, 1902.At an early age, he moved to Park City, Utah and resided there until 1956. He married Lillian Pearl Langford on Oct. 27, 1930. For 50 years, he worked for the United Park City Mining Company, retiring in 1967.
He was an avid sports fan, and during periods when Park City High School had no football or basketball coach, he volunteered his time as coach. He was elected president of the Park City School Board and served in that capacity for 16 years.
He was a member of the Uinta Lodge #7 F&AM, El Kalah Temple of the Shrine and Eastern Star, holding offices and leadership positions in each. He was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian; two daughters, Mrs. Howard A. (Lou Ann) Jorgensen, Salt Lake City; and Mrs. Lawrence D. (Roberta) Bench, Portland, Oregon; seven grandsons; one granddaughter; and a sister, Ethyle B. Hansen, Salt Lake City. Preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Mae; two brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service will be held at Evans & Early Mortuary, 574 East 100 South, Salt Lake City, on Friday, Nov. 9, at 12 noon. The family will greet friends at the mortuary after the services. Private burial services will be held at the Salt Lake Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Intermountain Unit of Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children or the Social Research Institute, Graduate School of Social Work, University of Utah.
