Except for one lone incumbent Democrat, Republicans retained control of the 11-seat Utah County contingent of the Utah House.

The GOP candidates - six of them incumbents - generally swept into office with comfortable margins of victory. The only surprise in this traditional Republican stronghold was the large number - 12 - of third-party candidates seeking election. In District 63, which surrounds Brigham Young University, the Democrats did not field a challenger, leaving American Party candidate Sterling Allen to face Republican Jordan Tanner alone. Tanner, an adjunct professor at BYU, won with 84 percent of the vote. He replaces outgoing Rep. Janette Hales, R-Provo.

Democrats also didn't compete against four-term incumbent R. Lee Ellertson in District 61, covering northwest Provo and south Orem. Ellertson, an assistant plant manager at Reilly Industries Inc., defeated his American Party challenger, John C. Paulson, 3,858 votes to 1,052.

Incumbent Democrat Tim Moran, a retired educator, won re-election in District 66 (southwest Provo), beating Republican Charlie Bates by nearly 1,000 votes. American Party candidate Florence G. Bale garnered 293 votes.

In Provo's District 64, Republican Byron L. Harward was returned to the House for a third term. Christine R. Fox, who was appointed to the House in 1987 and elected in 1988, was re-elected in District 57.
