A group of Kearns High students have raised $1,800 to finance the release of six river otters on the Green River this year.
Eight of those students, Brandi Bird, Leslie Price, Bernedette Suarez, Brandy Hodges, Cherrish Chesman, Barbara Riddle, Reyna Morrow and Misty Garrett, spent two days recently with officers of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources watching one of the releases. The girls, along with two advisers, watched a veterinarian implant transmitters and then went with officers to Little Hole near Flaming Gorge Reservoir to watch the release.
The students observed the officers using receivers to monitor the whereabouts of other otters that have been released in recent years.
Last year Kearns students raised $660 and sponsored release of two otters. Adviser Linda Pearson said it is a project that interests students who are becoming more aware of their environment and who want to become more involved with ecology.
