A "home-grown" Utah furniture company has expanded its operations to Utah County.

Fifty-eight years ago, R.C. Willey, a native of Syracuse north of Salt Lake City, opened an appliance shop in his hometown.R.C. Willey company president Sheldon Child said the founder did so well that he expanded to furniture. The company recently opened its fifth store at 40 E. 1300 South in Orem.

"We have had a great response to the store," Child said. "People have been asking us when we would come to Utah County, so we thought it was about time to locate a store here."

William H. Child, CEO of R.C. Willey, said, "We see tremendous growth potential in Utah County. In recent times we have consistently sent a truck a week to make deliveries into Utah County."

Now the company expects to have several trucks a day serving the area, he said.

The new store has more than 75,000 square feet of showroom display space and an additional 8,000 square feet of warehouse and office space.

"We've been in business since 1932 and, over the years, we have had many loyal customers from Utah County who have driven north to Salt Lake and Davis counties," he said. "Now we can service their needs here in Utah County."

Sheldon Child said approximately 95 percent of the store employees will come from Utah County.

"It is going to be a good move for everyone," he said.

William Child said that R.C. Willey has become the "24th largest furniture operation in the country."

There is one store still in Syracuse, another in Murray and two in West Valley.

Sheldon Child said the company plans to build a central warehouse in Salt Lake City soon.
