A North Salt Lake man facing two life prison terms for rape and rape of a child pleaded guilty this week in 2nd District Court to one charge of rape.
Curtis L. Bateman, 33, pleaded guilty to one first-degree felony charge of rape. The charge carries a prison term of five years to life.Defense attorney Terry Cathcart told Judge Douglas L Cornaby that he and the prosecution are both concerned about Bateman's mental status, and after an Adult Probation and Parole presentence investigation they will jointly recommend a 90-day prison evaluation.
The two incidents leading to the initial charges occurred in the summer of 1989 in North Salt Lake, prosecutor Carvel Harward said. The amended count Bateman pleaded to still charges rape because the victim is under 14 and legally cannot consent to sexual relations, he told the judge.
Cornaby scheduled sentencing for Nov. 29.
