The University of Utah basketball team will play its first exhibition game of the season when it meets Athletes in Action Wednesday night in the Huntsman Center.
Athletes in Action - whom Utah coach Rick Majerus calls "The elite team of amateur basketball" - defeated James Madison 127-116 recently. The game, which will not count on the Utes' official season record, will begin at 7:35 p.m..
The Utes will start three newcomers Wednesday. The lineup will consist of veterans Josh Grant at forward and Larry Cain at center, junior college transfer M'Kay McGrath at forward, and first-year sophomores Byron Wilson and Tyrone Tate at guard (if Tate is fully recovered from a muscle pull).
"We've been hampered by injuries," says Majerus of the Utes' preseason practices. "No one knows what we're about yet, because we haven't had everyone at practice yet."
Athletes in Action probably will start Zack Jones (formerly of San Diego State), Scott Hicks (Notre Dame), Lorenzo Romar, Ronnie Grandison and John Smith (Duke). The team's top reserve is Mitch McMullen (San Diego State).
