A former inmate at the Utah County jail, who is now an inmate at the Utah State Prison, has filed a lawsuit against Utah County claiming he suffered cruel and unusual punishment during his incarceration.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court by James Murdoch, alleges that on Jan. 3 he suffered a physical injury at the jail and did not receive adequate medical attention. The suit says Murdoch's rights under Article 8 of the U.S. Constitution were violated and he is seeking $50,000 in damages.Sheriff David Bateman said that while incarcerated Murdoch and another inmate got in a fight. However, Bateman said, jail officials handled the matter appropriately and expects the county will be cleared of any negligence.
