Rep. Howard Nielson, R-Utah, and his wife had a great Election Day, even though he isn't running.

Nielson, who is retiring from his 3rd District congressional seat at the end of the year and has already moved from Washington, D.C., back to Provo, received news Tuesday that he and his wife, Julie, will serve an 18-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In announcing earlier this year that he wouldn't seek a fifth term, Nielson said he hoped to serve his church as a missionary. Now he gets his chance.

Nielson and his wife will be "regular missionaries" in Sydney, Australia. "It was where the congressman and Julie wanted to go, but, of course, they didn't get a choice," said a spokesman for Nielson. Nielson and his wife enter the mission field Feb. 6.
