The owner of an auto shop was robbed and kidnapped over the weekend by two gunmen who forced him into the trunk of a car, police said.

One of the suspects went into Dumore Auto and Truck Repair, 1040 W. 2100 South, Sunday and tried to sell the owner an automobile. The 34-year-old man said he was not interested but he knew someone who might be and told the suspect to come back later, said Salt Lake Police Detective Wade Wayment. The man and a companion returned later Sunday night, pointed a gun at the victim and robbed him. They then forced him into the trunk of their car and drove to an area in Magna.

Wayment said the victim managed to open the trunk and noticed the vehicle was parked outside of a bar. When the gunmen saw him open the trunk, they took off his clothes, bound his hands and feet together with some rope, threw him back in the trunk and told him they would kill him if he tried to escape.

The robbers eventually returned the vehicle to the auto shop and apparently drove away in another car. The victim managed to get free a second time, got dressed and phoned the police. Detectives are continuing to search for the suspects.

Officers later learned the car they were trying to sell was stolen out of Ogden.
