Utah Education Association President Lily Eskelsen has gone on record opposing Initiative A, the proposal to remove the sales tax from food.
Passage of the initiative could eliminate funding for 3,900 college students, she said. "That's unacceptable." A predicted slowdown in the state's economy next year could escalate the figure to 9,700 post-high school students, she said.If the doors to Utah's institutions of higher education are slammed on local students, they likely will not find educational opportunity in other states at comparable cost, Eskelsen said.
The negative effect on the morale of Utah students hoping for a college education could be troublesome, she said.
