A Salt Lake County police officer was assaulted by a customer at a local tavern while doing a routine license check.
Officer Larry Turpin was hit in the face and bitten on the arm and finger by a customer at the Spot II Lounge, 4135 S. State Street.According to a police report, Turpin and another officer entered the tavern about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday to do a license check. Before they could ask the bartender for the licenses, a customer began yelling insults and profanity at the officers and making verbal threats.
After warning the customer several times to quiet down, Turpin told him he was under arrest for disturbing the peace and tried to handcuff him. The customer pulled away and struck Turpin in the face, the report said.
The customer also bit Turpin on the arm and finger.
The bartender tried to pull the officers away from the customer and was arrested for interference.
