An Arkansas woman who pleaded guilty to charges she kidnapped an 18-month-old boy from a Utah Human Services Department office building was sentenced last week to one to 15 years in prison.
Fifth District Judge Philip Eves also fined Dawn Marie Carnline, 19, Greenwood, Ark., $1,250 for the March 21 abduction of the toddler from the state agency in Cedar City, 300 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.Lawmen acting on a tip from a hitchhiker arrested Carnline and her 34-year-old husband, Robert, 20 miles north of Cedar City, about two hours after the abduction. The boy was found unharmed at a highway truck stop just north of Cedar City.
Detectives said a 57-year-old transient - Forrest Wise - had hitched a ride with the couple and went to Cedar City Police after he became convinced the woman had kidnapped the child.
Carnline's husband also pleaded guilty. He was undergoing a 90-day psychiatric evaluation prior to sentencing.
