Roger Closen, a former Bountiful policeman, pleaded guilty Friday in 2nd District Court to two charges of attempted forcible sexual abuse.
Both charges arose when Closen, 51, sexually molested women under the guise of teaching them self-defense techniques.Closen was originally charged with three counts of forcible sexual abuse involving two women and was scheduled for trial last Wednesday. But the trial was canceled and Closen agreed to a plea bargain when new charges involving another victim were filed.
Under the plea bargain, the three second-degree felony charges of forcible sexual abuse were reduced to one attempted forcible sexual abuse charge and Closen agreed to also plead guilty to the new charge.
In a preliminary hearing in Clearfield 2nd Circuit Court in February, two women testified that Closen responded to their neighboring Bountiful apartments on Jan. 8 after they complained of a prowler.
Closen, one testified, offered to teach her some self-defense techniques but instead sexually molested her.
According to their testimony, Closen returned to their apartments the next morning after he was off duty and molested them again.
Although Closen admitted the incidents took place, he initially said the women gave their consent.
Judge Rodney S. Page ordered Closen, who is living with his mother in Illinois, to return to court Sept. 6 for sentencing.
