A 17-year-old Santa-quin boy will spend 90 days in the Utah State Prison's diagnostic unit before being sentenced for raping a 13-year-old girl in June.

In August, Juvenile Court Judge Merrill Hermansen ruled that Jefferson Freeman, 13585 S. Highway 6, should stand trial as an adult because of his extensive record as a juvenile. On Oct. 5, Freeman pleaded no contest to the charge before 4th District Judge George E. Ballif. On Friday, Ballif referred Freeman to the prison to be evaluated.

The charge stems from an incident in which Freeman, while working for Santaquin City, approached the home of a girl he knew and asked for a drink of water. After receiving the drink, he raped the girl.

Freeman faces a potential sentence of five years to life in the state prison on the first-degree felony charge. His final sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 25.
