Ricks College quarterback Chris Hoge tossed two touchdown passes and scored on a keeper in a 27-6 win at home over Scottsdale, guaranteeing his team at least a tie in the Western State's Football League.

Ricks (6-1, 7-2) is a game ahead of both Dixie College and Glendale Community College, which are tied 5-2 in league play.In other WSFL action, Dixie kept pace with a 30-13 win at Snow College Saturday in Ephraim, Utah, and Glendale defeated Eastern Arizona 31-20 in Thatcher. Phoenix beat Arizona Western 28-6 in the only other league game.

Hoge, the younger brother of Pittsburg Steeler running back Merrill Hoge, threw scoring strikes of 18 yards to Reid Swenson and 8 yards to Cache Miller. He also scored on a run from one yard out. Ricks' kicker Truman Childs kicked field goals from 25 and 30 yards out.

The Vikings last won the championship in 1986.

Scottsdale Community College freshman running back Charlie Garner ran for 173 yards on 44 carries, but fell short of breaking the national junior college single-season rushing record.

Garner finished the season with 2,059 yards on 271 carries and tied O.J. Simpson's 1965 freshman-season national record of 22 touchdowns.

Dixie quarterback Jeff Lindstrom completed 10 of 19 for 161 yards and threw scoring passes of 21 yards to Kyle Hughes, 27 yards to Kalin Hall and 13 yards to Chris Paronto.

Hall also carried in a one-yard touchdown run. Rebel's defensive back Jason Duckworth pulled down three interceptions.
